In July 2014 we began taking photographs of the
memorials which had been transcribed by volunteers in 1990, and in September 2015
we finished the task.
The inscriptions on many of the memorials are
weathering at an alarming rate and some of the inscriptions recorded
in 1990 are now either very difficult to read, or obscured by moss,
lichen, ivy, branches, toppling or sinkage. As the inscriptions had
already been recorded we have chosen in most cases to show a general
view of the graves, not wanting to disturb the churchyard or risk upsetting
families or friends. In a few cases families have restored fallen or
sunken memorials since the first photos were taken.
Headstones emplaced after 1990 are mostly not
recorded, but inscriptions and tablets added to graves have been noted; you may also spot one or two burials
that were omitted in error from the first transcription.
In a few cases we have included photographs of
modern
burials, for example that of village historian Joan Bradshaw of
Grange Farm. For the purposes of the web-site, we
have allocated modern burials a new series of numbers starting with 400.
You will see that the 400 series numbers are not shown on the 1990
plan of the churchyard but we have indicated in the right hand
column of the table where these memorials can be found.
This web-page is the latest version with
corrections and all the photographs taken relating to the 1990
survey.
The original survey of the churchyard was undertaken by a
team of volunteers circa 1990, before the advent of laptop
computers and digital cameras. The survey was undertaken by local
historians Cora
Weaver, June Hebden and Raymond Ward.
Ray Ward passed away peacefully at The Boynes
Nursing Home on July 28th 2011, aged 97 years. He had been Head
Teacher Somers Park Avenue Primary School, a supporter of Malvern
Museum, and was a founder member of the Malvern Hills District
Footpath Society. June Hebden passed away in 2013. Cora Weaver is
the well-known author of a number of books about the Victorian 'water cure'.
For example, see above the memorial in memory of
nursing sisters Emmie Tudor Edwardes died 1928 and her sister
Frances Tudor Edwardes of St Davids, Wells Road, Great Malvern which
was described in the notebooks as - 'carved stone of a maiden
wearing headband, holding flowers in right hand, long loose gown,
knotted half way down left arm'. You will find the inscriptions
on the front and rear of the base.
This web-page contains a transcription from the
notebooks which it is hoped will be a useful resource for family and
local historians. You should note however, the burial register of the church contains over
1,000 names and only a proportion of those have legible markers. In
most cases older wooden markers have disappeared completely, and in
a few cases very old graves have been reused.
In the churchyard you will occasionally find the
graves of local families grouped together.
Many residents lived to a ripe
old age, but sadly some died as children, teenagers, as a result of
accidents, and in war.
Inside the church you will find a small wooden cross
set on the north wall, which is a memorial to the grandson of Rector
James Bateman Wathen (plot 17). He was
John Wathen Eyton-Lloyd, Second
Lieutenant, of the 10th Squadron
Royal Flying Corps,
who died on 24th June 1917 aged 22 years and is buried in France.
The table below has five columns. In the first
column is a plot number in the range 1 to 323) which relates to the
plan made of the churchyard in 1990 and should enable you to walk
the churchyard and locate a grave. Columns 2, 3 and 4 record the
name of the deceased and year of death. Column 5 records the
inscription, a link to the photo of the memorial, and in some cases
additional information about the person, which is shown in italics.
The entry 'mound' indicates the possibility of a
modern burial prior to placement of a headstone. The ground is
usually allowed to settle for many months before a memorial is erected.
Memorials to those cremated are mainly along the
north, south and west walls of the church.
Those few photographs of modern memorials have
been allocated a new series of 400 plot numbers in the second table
below, but you are cautioned that these are not the same as the
numbers used in the burial register and master plan of the
churchyard held by the Churchwarden.
